Everyday tax on a bill
GST for small sellers: rates, invoices, and what not to type here
If you sell diyas on Instagram, repair phones in a market, or invoice a company as a freelancer, GST shows up as 5, 12, 18 or 28 percent on a base amount. This guide is about the arithmetic on an invoice — not about registering a GSTIN or filing GSTR-1.
Forward charge on a bill
IndiaKit’s GST calculator takes a base amount and a slab, then adds tax. ₹1,000 at 18% becomes ₹180 of GST and ₹1,180 payable. Composition dealers, exempt supplies, and place-of-supply rules are outside that box. If you are charging a client, match the HSN or SAC your accountant already uses. If you are a consumer reading a restaurant bill, you are usually looking at a tax that is already in the total.
Some goods still sit at 5% or 12%. Luxury and sin goods can sit at 28% plus cess. The slab on this site is a dropdown, not a classification engine. When in doubt, the GST portal and a GST practitioner beat a website.
GSTIN checks versus the portal
Our GSTIN tool only checks the 15-character pattern and the checksum letter. A number can look valid and still be cancelled or belong to someone else. Search live taxpayers only on gst.gov.in. Never paste Aadhaar, PAN, or bank details into IndiaKit to “speed up” a registration. We will not collect them, and anyone who asks for an OTP in a chat is not this site.
