FX spreads, RBI, and not a dealing room

Currency Deal Finder

“Best dollar rate in Fort, Mumbai” is a street question. IndiaKit is not an authorised dealer. This guide explains that banks, full-fledged money changers, and cards all add a spread over a reference rate, and that rbi.org.in publishes reference rates you can look at. We will not ask for a card number, and we will not promise today’s “deal.”

The price tag, not a checkout

Students paying SEVIS fees and importers in Tuticorin chase 10 paise as if it were a coupon site. A unique explainer that points at RBI and at our live INR converter is more honest than a fake “deal finder” scraping illegal rates.

Discount and unit maths

Compare the RBI reference (rbi.org.in) with your bank’s treasury rate and with the mid-market number on our currency converter. The gap is the spread.

TCS on overseas remittances, if it applies to your facts, is on incometax.gov.in — not a “deal.” LRS is a policy, not a coupon.

Hawala is illegal. This guide will not help you find it.

Checking a USD spread against RBI

A parent in Kochi notes the RBI reference, then looks at the bank’s quote for a USD draft, then at IndiaKit’s mid-market converter. The bank is worse by a few rupees per dollar, which is the product they are selling: convenience and legality.

Guide, not a live deal engine. Official reference: rbi.org.in. No card numbers. TCS/LRS are legal facts you confirm on government sites. Not an authorised dealer.

Authorised dealers and some banks publish card and TT rates that differ from the interbank mid-market rate. A tourist converting rupees at an airport counter is usually paying a spread plus a fee. IndiaKit does not sell forex and does not take a cut of a conversion.

RBI rules on carrying cash, TCS on foreign remittances under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme, and card-network markups change. Read the circulars and your bank’s schedule of charges. Our currency tools show a mid-market sketch plus an optional fee percentage you type yourself.

No affiliate “best rate in Connaught Place” list is running on this page. If that ever appears, it will be labelled as advertising or affiliate, separate from the calculator.

Common questions

Do you have a coupon for Thomas Cook or a bank?

No. If we ever list an affiliate, it will be labelled. This guide is educational.

Is the RBI rate the rate I will get?

No. It is a reference. Dealers quote around it. Your receipt is the contract.

Can I carry cash dollars out of India?

FEMA / customs rules apply. Read RBI and Customs, not this paragraph, for limits. We will not coach a concealment story.
