Credit-weighted school or college GPA

School GPA Calculator

GPA here is total grade points divided by total credits. Thirty-six points across five credits is 7.2. That is the definition used in many Indian engineering internals and in US-style transcripts, and it is not “add the subject percentages and divide by the number of subjects.”

The conversion students actually type

A VTU student in Belagavi and a CBSE school that experiments with credits both mess up unweighted averages. IndiaKit asks for the sums you already have (points and credits) so the article can stay on weighting, not on converting CGPA with 9.5.

The formula used here

GPA = points / credits. Defaults 36 and 5 → 7.2. If a subject is 4 credits at grade 9, that subject contributes 36 grade-points — the same 36 as five credits of mixed grades in the default, which is why you must sum correctly offline.

Pass/fail credits with zero points still increase the denominator if your rules include them. Follow the ordinance.

This is not a percentage. Convert only if your controller publishes a table.

36 grade-points and 5 credits in Belagavi

A semester sheet lists credit-weighted points that add to 36 over 5 credits. GPA is 7.2. The student resists converting 7.2 × 9.5 into a fake 68.4% because VTU may not use that multiplier.

Boards publish their own notes

You must add points and credits yourself. No letter-to-point map (A=10) is built in. Not an official SGPA certificate.

Common questions

How do I get “total grade points” from five subjects?

For each subject, multiply grade point by credits, then add. That sum is the numerator. Credits add for the denominator.

Is 7.2 GPA the same as 7.2 CGPA?

SGPA is one term; CGPA is usually the credit-weighted average of several terms. This tool can compute either if you enter the right totals.

Do failed subjects enter the GPA?

If they carry credits and zero points, they drag the average down. Some rules replace them after a reappearance. Use the rule sheet, not a guess.
