Tank range divided into trip distance, minus the tank you start with, is how many fuel stops to plan. An 850 km run with a 400 km range needs 2 stops in this sketch (ceil(850/400) − 1). That is a Delhi–Lucknow–kind of distance, not a promise that every dhabha pump is open at 2 a.m.

Fares and time, not tickets

Families driving Bengaluru–Hyderabad or Kolkata–Puri still run to fumes because “the next town is close.” IndiaKit forces a stop count so you leave with a reserve. The fuel-cost tool is the rupee cousin; this one is logistics.

The sketch behind the figure

Stops = max(0, ceil(distance / range) − 1). Defaults 850 km and 400 km → 2. If range is 0, stops are 0 in code — treat that as invalid input.

Always keep a reserve; do not plan to hit 0 km remaining at the pump. Hill ghats and AC cut range.

A family drives 850 km with a car that honestly does 400 km a tank. IndiaKit says plan 2 fuel stops. They still fill at 80 km remaining, not at 2 km, because NH services can be closed.

Common questions

Why subtract 1?

Because you start with a tank. ceil(distance/range) is the number of tanks needed; minus one is extra fills on the road.

What if I start at half a tank?

Halve the range input or add a stop. This form assumes a full tank at kilometre 0.

Does CNG have fewer pumps?

Often yes on some corridors. Type a shorter range if CNG stations are sparse, even if the cylinder “could” do 400 km.
